Lamontville Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has called for the implementation of VAR in South Africa’s Betway Premiership after his side’s 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday.
Steps have been taken towards the implementation of a VAR system in the country’s top league, with the government’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture working with the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) on a suitable system and roll-out.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture announced in November that SAFA’s VAR Project Leader, Mr Daniel Bennett, had visited and assessed Quality in Spain, one of the four shortlisted global VAR suppliers for the roll-out in South Africa. This was followed by a “kick-off meeting” with FIFA, outlining a roadmap for implementation. The department also stated that the Nedbank Cup semifinals and final would be used to test the system.
However, SAFA responded to the statement released by the department, stating the football governing body was the only organisation authorised to provide updates on the implementation of VAR in the country.
Since then, there has only been silence on the matter.
After his side fell for the fifth straight game in all competitions, Mngqithi called for progress on the matter of VAR.
“Yeah, man, it’s not what we’re looking for. And worse when we lose from an offside goal. But I do not want to blame the officials on this one,” said Mngqithi.
“I think it’s high time that the league looks at this thing differently. Because the reality is the game has become too dynamic. It’s very difficult for officials to follow every movement. And even ourselves, some of these things we see very late because we’ve had a chance of looking at the video footage. So we can’t expect referees to be able to be in touch with everything that happens in the game.”
Arrows conceded in the 39th minute from a set piece as Aiden McCarthy netted his first senior goal for Kaizer Chiefs. However, he did so from an offside position, which was not picked up by the officials.
“Because on the first ball that was played, Aiden [McCarthy] was not offside.
But when the ball touched [Flávio] Silva, Aiden was already offside. And that is an offside because he’s caught after that action. So the reality is the VAR is more than important,” Mngqithi said.
“We are not playing for R200 here, guys. We’re playing for R20 million. So it’s very important that we up our game. As the biggest league in Africa, we have to up our game.”
The 54-year-old emphasised that much rides on games, which can be better officiated through the implementation of VAR. He added that if South Africa wants the title of biggest league in Africa, something needs to be done.
“We are always saying we are the biggest league in Africa. And I just think we should step up. Whether the government is assisting or we assist ourselves because we are playing for serious money. And we have so much at stake. We lose our jobs and there’s so much that happens.”

Vinicius Junior: Real Madrid forward to resume contract talks as Arsenal maintain an interest
Vinicius returned to the club for his first pre-season training session and medical assessment on Monday following his World Cup campaign with Brazil.
The forward is training under Jose Mourinho for the first time this week, with sources close to the Portuguese manager saying he is keen for the winger to commit his future to Real.
Vinicius also wants to remain at the Bernabeu but with his contract expiring next summer, Real risk losing him on a free transfer if no agreement is reached.
That has increased the urgency for the club to resolve his future before the end of the transfer window, with talks set to resume in earnest in the next few days.
There was a similar situation in 2023 when, with his previous contract entering its final year, Vinicius signed a new deal extending his stay until 2027.
Renewal talks have taken place over the past 18 months, but slowed because of disagreements over wages and status within the club.
The 26-year-old is believed to want recognition as Los Blancos’ top star financially, especially after carrying the team for years before the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.
Real, however, are traditionally strict about maintaining their salary structure under president Florentino Perez, with Mbappe currently top of the club’s high earners.
Despite this tension, Vinicius has described Real as “the club of my dreams” and said he hopes to remain there “for many years”.
The club are hopeful of concluding talks this week. If a new contract can’t be agreed – that’s when Arsenal come in.

Swansea City: Vitor Matos says Premier League always the goal after signing new contract
It was a fifth successive mid-table finish for the Welsh club, who have not mounted a serious promotion push since Steve Cooper’s team were beaten in the 2021 play-off final by Brentford.
Having been among the Championship’s biggest spenders in the 2025 close season, Swansea’s hierarchy have once again shown ambition this summer.
The club are believe to have spent in the region of £15m on Elijah Just, Joseph Opoku and Moussa Yeo, while Stephen Welsh has signed on a free transfer.
They are also working on deals for a left-back and central midfielder and may look to add another centre-back before the window closes.
“The focus is improving the team, improving the players, put the team in a level that we can compete against everyone,” Matos added.
“There are strong teams [in the Championship] with a lot in terms of budget and a lot of expectations.
“So it doesn’t mean that we need to be the best team, but it means that we need to be able to compete against everyone and be able to win against everyone.
“That’s the good thing about sports. You don’t need to be the best one, but you need to be able to beat the best one. That’s what we want to be.”
