D-Day in Spygate – what happens next?
The independent disciplinary commission has three people, with the chair usually being a King’s Counsel (KC). They sit with two side members who are lawyers, barristers or mediators.
It is expected to be a virtual hearing but it could take up to 24 hours for the verdict to be made public.
If guilty, options open to the independent disciplinary commission include a fine, a points deduction for next season or throwing Saints out of the play-offs.
Unlike, say, a profit and sustainability hearing, there is no framework or sliding scale of offence-to-sanction. This is completely new.
There is no direct precedent because no one has ever broken regulation 127.
The independent disciplinary commission will, in effect, be creating it – which adds further significance.
Whether spying is deemed enough for the panel to think it has a significant consequence over promotion will be key.
We have seen a spying case before, when Leeds United were found guilty of watching Derby training seven years ago.
Leeds were fined £200,000 but there are a couple of crucial differences.
Firstly, in 2019 there was no rule which outlawed watching the opposition train before a game. As a result, the EFL brought in regulation 127.
Then there is the timing. Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa was caught sending a member of his staff to Derby’s training ground in the middle of January, hardly a crucial point of the season.
Saints stand accused of spying on their opponents before one of the most important games of the season, a play-off semi-final.
The argument is that a fine would be meaningless if Southampton beat Hull to earn promotion to the Premier League.
That would give the Saints a minimum £110m in broadcasting revenues.
Another option is a points penalty. This could be seen as a halfway house, whereby the independent disciplinary commission dodges the nuclear option of banishing Southampton from the play-offs but still applies a sporting sanction.
If Saints get promoted, the EFL would not be able to unilaterally apply the penalty in the top flight, but it can recommend to the Premier League board that the deduction is carried over.
Removing Southampton from the play-offs would most likely be achieved by giving Boro a default 3-0 win for the first leg, and therefore a 4-2 aggregate victory.
The independent disciplinary commission must find a punishment which is fair but also acts as a deterrent to any other club who might try to spy – especially before a game of such magnitude.
Saints head coach Tonda Eckert and his staff could also face Football Association disciplinary action, though the EFL process must conclude first.
The coaching staff do have questions to answer.
Who knew what, and when? Was there a live stream? Was it uploaded anywhere?
At the 2024 Olympics women’s tournament, Canada were found guilty of spying on New Zealand using a drone.
Fifa docked six points from Canada while three members of the coaching staff, including the head coach, were banned from all football for a year.

Commonwealth Games 2026: Adam McKeown and Gary Kelly win gold after tiebreak
After reaching the final with some tiebreak heroics in the semi-final win over Malaysia, it seemed only fitting that the final would go the same way.
McKeown and Kelly were out of the traps fast in the first set as they took four shots in the third end on route to a 6-2 win.
The English pair fought back in a tight second set to build a 3-0 lead, and they held on to win 4-2 and send the final to a one-end shootout.
It was Kelly who came closest to the jack and Walker was unable to respond with his final bowl, which started the celebrations for a well-deserved gold medal.
“We wish it wasn’t always an extra end but we played really well,” added McKeown.
“We got a huge four shots early on and kicked on from there in the first set.
“In the second set we lost a three early on in probably the worst end of the game, and then clawed our way back into it.
“Gary had a chance to win the game with his last bowl and unfortunately just missed, but he played an absolute bomb on the tiebreak end to secure the win.”
Kelly said he had to grab the chance “with both hands” with the decisive bowl of the match.
“Obviously there’s nerves and there’s pressure, but you’ve just got to have belief and trust.
“I’ve been lucky enough n my career that I’ve done it before, so you’ve just got to reach into those moments and believe.
“You have to enjoy and embrace those moments as well, and thankfully I delivered.”

Commonwealth Games 2026: Josh Kerr wins Saturday night scrap in Glasgow
At the time, Kerr gave his answer as the bell tolled. In a flash, he made his move, bursting to the outside in pursuit of Myers and Cheruiyot, who made theirs momentarily first.
With 250m to go, Kerr left them behind. Wightman gamely tried to follow but how do you chase down a man this fast? His brave gamble failed and the bronze medallist from the last two Games trailed home in sixth.
By then, Kerr was already celebrating gold, with Myers coming through for silver and Cheruiyot bronze.
“I peeked up at the screen, saw I had a bit of a gap, and I felt great,” added the Edinburgh athlete, who has been racing at Scotstoun since he was a child.
“I was just trying to stay present and enjoy it. I learned how to race on that track – and I’ve had some pretty bad ones out there – so to really enjoy that last 100m was a really important moment.”
It was the moment Glasgow 2026 has been building to. The historic, reinstated, Blue Riband event of these Games got a fittingly elite winner. As a student of the sport’s history, Kerr will appreciate that.
And as a kid who was at the athletics event at Hampden in 2014, he knew how much joy every man, women and child inside this place would derive from every picture he had taken, every word he shared with them, and every scrawl of his name.
“I have to take my time out there because they’ve waited and put their hard-earned money to come out and watch me perform,” he said.
“You’ve got to stay in your lane and realise I’m lucky coming into this championship healthy, ready to go and I’m in the best shape of my life. And to do that in front of a home crowd is very special.”

Mark Chamberlain vs Pierce O’Leary: Briton beats Irishman to take IBO light-welterweight belt
Briton Mark Chamberlain stunned Republic of Ireland’s Pierce O’Leary as he dropped him twice on the way to securing a knockout win in the 10th round to claim the IBO light-welterweight belt.
Chamberlain had to climb off the canvas himself in the seventh round as O’Leary struck him with a ferocious body shot in front of a capacity crowd in Dublin.
But just as momentum appeared to be swinging in the favour of O’Leary, Chamberlain found a breakthrough and managed to get the stoppage late on.
Portsmouth’s Chamberlain now moves to 18 wins with one defeat, bouncing back to winning ways for the first time since losing to Josh Padley in 2024.
This was Chamberlain’s first fight since he drew with Jack Rafferty in Altrincham last summer.
After a tight and cagey first round, Chamberlain stunned the home crowd of around 7,000 as he landed a flush left hand that sent O’Leary flying back onto the canvas.
Chamberlain then found another big shot in the next round as he sent his opponent to the floor again with a short left hook.
But O’Leary responded well to the knockdowns, rallied by his home crowd as he pressed on to find a way back into the fight.
He then found a breakthrough at the end of the seventh round as he backed Chamberlain into a corner and sent a punishing shot into his chest.
Chamberlain was slow to get to his feet but survived the count and managed to avoid major punishment before the bell sounded.
O’Leary continued to press on, with Chamberlain looking tired and the Irishman buoyed by the crowd.
But Chamberlain struck in the 10th with a combination that saw O’Leary drop his hands and then pressed on, landing a number of clean shots that included a straight right hand to send O’Leary tumbling into the ropes and to the canvas.
